Diesel Particulate filters (DPF) catch bits of soot (diesel particulate) in the exhaust. If the soot trapped by a DPF is not cleaned regularly, the filter cannot work properly. When the DPF is cleaned, the excess soot is burned off. For DPF this process is called “regeneration”.
